Mats was born in 1965 and grew up in Butorp, Deje in Sweden. He started playing piano but then switched to guitar where the discovery of playing chords was a milestone in Mats' musical life. He took up piano studies again at the age of 18 and studied music at 2 folk high schools before moving to Boston in the USA in 1991 to study at Berklee College of Music. 
with the major Professional Music.
 
After completing his studies he moved to Stockholm 1995, where he worked as a freelance musician. Mats have been a part of a variety of different musical projects in Stockholm. In February 2017 he moved to Mariestad. 

Between 2009-2017, he played with the Stockholm based jazz group Jam Station, as a pianist and composer.

In Mariestad Mats has been collaborated with the singer Emma Sjögren, - Two of a Kind and with the saxophone player Johan Pihlström - Skimmelå/Pihlström Duo and the jazz group , Jazz Power Group
